Prebiotics vs Probiotics: What Is the Difference?
Understand the basic difference between live microorganisms and substrates they use, without exaggerated health promises.
What are probiotics?
Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. Not every fermented food or microbe automatically meets this definition.
What are prebiotics?
Prebiotics are substrates selectively used by host microorganisms that confer a health benefit. The word does not describe every dietary fiber.
Are they interchangeable?
No. Their definitions and uses are different. Research findings depend on the specific ingredient or microbial strain, its dose and the population studied.
What should a product label tell you?
For probiotic products, look for strain identification, quantity and storage information. For prebiotic products, identify the specific ingredient and serving amount.
Important considerations
Some individuals may need medical advice before using microbial supplements, particularly people with severe illness or impaired immunity. Food-first choices can be a useful starting point.
