How to Read a Supplement Label
A practical checklist for understanding serving sizes, ingredients, warnings and responsible supplement shopping.
Start with the serving size
The serving size shows how much of the product the listed amounts refer to. Check how many servings are in the container before comparing two products.
Check amounts and units
Look carefully at milligrams (mg), micrograms (µg), international units (IU) and any applicable daily value percentages. Two similar-looking products may provide different quantities.
Read the complete ingredient list
Some products contain additional ingredients such as sweeteners, flavors and capsule materials. Check allergens and any special warnings on the actual local product label.
Do not mistake marketing for evidence
A supplement is not a substitute for a varied diet or medically indicated treatment. Check whether any health claim is permitted in your country and supported by appropriate evidence.
Check instructions and suitability
Follow the local label. If pregnant, taking medication, managing a health condition or considering supplements for a child, ask a qualified healthcare professional before use.
